About Michael

Our Principal Geotechnical Officer, Mick Morrison, has been a part of the Morrison Geotechnic
team for more than twenty years.

Beginning part-time in 1993 as a Trainee Soil Technician, Mick studied for his Bachelor of Arts in Geological Sciences and Social Work at the University of Queensland. On graduating in 2000, Mick moved into a full-time role with Morrison Geotechnic, before being promoted to Laboratory Manager and then Geologist. In 2004, Mick became a Director and owner of our business.

With many years experience in geotechnical engineering compliance testing and civil construction, Michael has been heavily involved in projects which include major infrastructure developments such as road and rail bridges, dams, highways and bus ways, geotechnical planning and investigation for large residential subdivisions. His experience with projects ranges from small subdivisions and road widening, to major projects and large satellite cities which cater for populations of greater than 20,000.

Special interests include construction earthworks trouble shooting, temporary works, foundation preparation, pavement construction, forensic investigations, preventative planning and civil earthworks and roadworks consulting.

With his enthusiasm for completing projects on time and under budget, Mick is always looking for better ways to work. He is passionate about creating a workplace where Morrison Geotechnic’s staff can shine as our greatest asset.

Mick takes a particular interest in forensic investigations – working with clients to determine why problems have occurred, and what can be done differently to avoid them in future. His encyclopaedic knowledge of ground conditions across South East Queensland has been invaluable when advising our clients on what to expect on-site.

Into the future, Mick’s focus is on establishing better relationships with the Civil industry, and fostering a greater understanding of the intricacies of geotechnical testing and engineering. He is looking forward to ensuring Morrison Geotechnic is at the forefront of modern geotechnical techniques.

About Dennis

Dennis Riley is a Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer and the Managing Director of Morrison Geotechnic with over 35 years professional experience in geotechnical engineering in Africa, UK, Australia, and South-East Asia. He has been involved with geotechnical studies for power generation projects, cement plants, high rise building projects, roads and bridges, dams, land reclamation projects, infrastructure projects, resorts, and mixed developments.

Dennis has extensive experience in earthworks for large civil projects, bored pile and barrette foundations, deep basement support systems, deterministic and probabilistic slope stability assessment and engineering of soft soils and in karstic limestone formations.

Areas of special interest include quantitative and qualitative risk assessments, embankments and water retaining structures, piled foundations, foundation engineering, soft soil engineering, forensic engineering and expert witness studies for failed slopes, excavations and workplace accidents involving geotechnical failures.

With professional development in both a geotechnical consulting environment and a contracting environment, Dennis understands the necessity to formulate innovative or state-of-the-art geotechnical design solutions that are practical, easy and safe to construct and cost effective.

About James

James is a qualified Geotechnical Engineer, and has wide and varied experience working in the civil construction and mining industries.  He has worked throughout Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory on various projects acquiring valuable knowledge and experience in a range of geotechnical fields including major infrastructure, roads, rail lines, bridges, dams, highways, pile supervision, pile testing and analysis, quarries, slope stability, groundwater surveys, acid sulphate soil investigations, high rise and deep excavation.

James’s areas of special interest include earthworks, pavement, rock foundation design and working platform design and assessment. James is actively involved in all aspects of geo-engineering investigations including slope stability, river bank stability, and retaining wall stability, deep and shallow structural foundations, residential and commercial development, subsurface drilling and logging, interpretation of borehole data, CPT testing and analysis and plate load testing. James is often called upon to inspect excavations to assess stability, and to provide geotechnical engineering advice on some of our many earthworks projects as required.

James has undertaken on-site laboratory management for roadworks projects, and also conducted field supervision of major projects.  He has held NATA signatory status for numerous soils, aggregate and concrete tests.

James has a professional approach to all aspects of his work and has become a valuable asset to the Morrison Geotechnic team.

James manages our team of engineers, scientists and geologists in our Brisbane Office.

About Liam

Having started with the Company in 2004 Liam has gained vast and varied experience through his involvement with a wide range of civil and mining projects throughout South East Queensland.

About Lyle

Lyle started with the company in 2002, working his way through his training as a Laboratory Technician then Field Technician during his early employ. During that time he gained a good understanding and sound knowledge of the principals of laboratory testing and field work. In 2013 he accepted the role of Field Manager for our Brisbane Laboratory.

Lyle manages the field work for large scale residential and industrial developments in South East Queensland, overseeing major infrastructure Level One Earthworks and Level Two Roadworks projects which comprise Earthworks Fill, Road Pavement and Service Trench constructions. Lyle manages our team of Field Technicians ensuring their training and skills are maintained to a high standard. Lyle is an integral member of our team.

About Ian

Ian has been with the company since 1987, working in his current role as Gold Coast Laboratory Manager since 1995. Ian’s experience covers all facets of civil construction and quality compliance testing. This experience is reflected in his broad range of projects which include major infrastructure developments and upgrades such as M1 Motorway and Brisbane to Gold Coast Rail Line, major shopping centres and small to large residential and commercial subdivisions.

Ian’s special interests include geotechnical investigations to aid in structural design and include failed structure and pavement assessments. His core work on the Gold Coast is in compaction control of earthworks and road construction, quarry quality testing, Level One Earthworks observation and water quality testing.
